Hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive species native to east Asia, is a tiny insect that consumes the sap of hemlock trees. According to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the insect is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of hemlock trees in eastern states.
