The NC Forest Service (NCFS) Nursery Program is in the beginning stages of collaboration with NCFS, US Forest Service and NC State University to produce hemlock seedlings. They are planning on producing both Eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock this coming season. Hemlocks are in severe decline from hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). The goal for this fall and all next year is to develop protocols for seedling production in greenhouses at the Linville River Nursery. The selections from both species that may exhibit varying degrees of resistance to HWA will not be used in the beginning because they are in extremely short supply and too valuable to sacrifice while learning.
